Kings of the Keystone State
Don Bostrom of The Morning Call of Allentown, PA names Arnold Palmer the #1 golfer from the Keystone State and names the Pennsylvania Dream 18.
So, who would rate as Pennsylvania's all-time greatest golfers? We've got your Pennsylvania Dream 18 right here:
"1. ARNOLD PALMER (Latrobe) -- Quite simply, ''The King.'' One of the most beloved and revered athletes of all-time, Palmer is credited with ushering in the modern golf boom thanks to a slashing, colorful, go-for-it-all style that was a perfect fit for television. Almost any golfer or fan was enlisted in ''Arnie's Army'' at some point because it was easy to identify with this blue-collar, hard-nosed competitor with the magnetic personality who always displayed sportsmanship and respect for the game and its patrons.
This American icon and living legend has a playing record rivaled by only an elite few. Palmer won the 1954 U.S. Amateur, seven professional majors -- including four Masters -- 62 PGA Tour events and 10 Champions Tour stops. Palmer was Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year in 1960 and is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and PGA Hall of Fame. He later became a well-respected course designer and a popular product pitch man."
